The Neuroscience Network of the Lake Geneva Region

The NeuroLéman Network – established in Spring 2018 – is a non-profit association since 2024. It serves as a unifying force for neuroscientists and clinicians across the Lac Léman (Lake Geneva) region. Our members, comprising faculty members and group leaders from EPFL, the Universities of Lausanne (UNIL), Geneva (UNIGE), Fribourg (UNIFR), as well as of the University Hospitals of Lausanne (CHUV) and Geneva (HUG), represent diverse fields such as neurobiology, neuroengineering, neurocomputation, neurology, psychiatry, and psychology.

Our primary objective is to cultivate a vibrant community of scientists and clinicians dedicated to advancing neuroscience and neurotechnology in the Lake Geneva region. With a focus on both basic, translational and clinical neuroscience, we strive to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation to enhance our understanding of brain function in health and disease, and ultimately bringing new therapies to patients.

Central to our mission is the creation of a collaborative environment that fosters the open exchange of research and ideas. Through our network, we aim to facilitate new collaborations and serve as a catalyst for scientific progress.

Moreover, we are committed to nurturing the next generation of neuroscientists by promoting excellence in education and providing numerous opportunities for training and scientific exchange. We support three neuroscience doctoral programs (EDNE , EDBB and LNDS) and  our members are strongly engaged in the organization of national and international workshops and symposia, to facilitate learning and networking.

In addition, we host an annual meeting (NLN) in collaboration with our doctoral programs, bringing together doctoral students and researchers from all our neuroscience institutions in the region. This event serves as a platform for sharing research findings, fostering collaborations, and strengthening the ties within our neuroscience community.

CHUV

The principal investigators at the Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV, Centre hospitalier universitaire vaudois) in Lausanne are affiliated with the Department of Clinical Neuroscience. This brings together the services of Neurosurgery, Neurology, and Neuropsychology and Neurorehabilitation, as well as the Memory Centre and a Neuroscience Research Centre. The researchers at the Center for Psychiatric Neurosciences based within the Campus of the Cery Psychiatric Hospital focus on several psychiatric diseases including schizophrenia, depression, drug addiction and anxiety states.

Epfl

The research groups at EPFL - Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale Lausanne - investigate fundamental brain function and disorders using approaches that span the fields neurobiology, basic and computer sciences and engineering. They are affiliated with the Brain Mind Institute, the Institute of Bioengineering, the Blue Brain Project and the Center for Neuroprosthetics.  In addition to the main Lausanne campus, EPFL laboratories are located at Campus Biotech in Geneva and Campus SUVA in Sion.

Neuroscience research groups at the University Hospital of Geneva are affiliated with the University of Geneva Faculty of Medicine. The Department of clinical neurosciences is composed of the divisions neurology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, neuroreeducation, ENT (ear-nose-throat) and head-and-neck surgery. Research activities are focused on therapies for disorders such as epilepsy, brain tumors, and impairments of hearing, vision, memory, or movement.

Unifr

The research groups at the NMS Department and the Department of Psychology at the University of Fribourg perform research on the basic neurobiological mechanisms underlying movement, vision, emotion, cognition and behavior. They are part of the Fribourg Interfaculty Center for Cognition which coordinates Neuroscience and Cognitive Sciences between the Medical and Psychology Departments.

Unige

The PIs at the Geneva Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Basic Neurosciences are located at two campuses, CMU (Centre Medical Universitaire) and Campus Biotech. With a focus on neuronal circuits from molecules to behavior they aim to better understand brain function and disease. Other members of our network are affiliated with the UNIGE faculties of Humanities, Psychology & Educational Sciences, or Economics & Management. The Geneva Neuroscience Center is a multidisciplinary institution regrouping more than 50 of these research groups and is affiliated with several departments within the University of Geneva.

UNIL

The neuroscience research groups at the University of Lausanne, Faculty of Biology and Medicine at the “Site du Bugnon” have their laboratories within three different Departments, the Department of Fundamental Neurosciences, the Department of Physiology, and the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology. They conduct basic and clinical research to study brain function and dysfunction at multiple levels, from molecules, to systems and behavior. There are also several neuroscience groups at the Center for Integrative Genomics, which is located at the Campus in Dorigny.
